ONSTAGE: Stepping Out in Summertime – Part One

Juuuuuuune!! June, June, June!  You may be thinking that since the opera house is dark in the summer months, that means that LOSA members are on vacation. That is definitely not the case!   When you love what you do as much as we do, you don’t stop just because it’s summertime. Here are just a few of the performances that our members are involved with during the off season:

Regular Chorus Tenor Geoffrey Agpalo is currently starring as Alfredo in La Traviata at Opera Theatre Saint Louis togreat acclaim.  He also had a featured Soundbite in the May issue of Opera News. Check it out here!

Regular Chorus Mezzo Pamela Williams traveled to Brazil this month to sing in recital and perform the role of Flora in La Traviata with ECAI – Espaço Cultural Alexandre Innecco.

LOSA production staff members Rachel Tobias and Dan Sokalski will be stage managing Bernstein’s Mass at the Ravinia Music Festival in July.

Pamela Williams performs in concert for a production of Giuseppe Verdi’s “Rigoletto”.

18 current members of LOSA are performing with the Grant Park Music Festival Chorus throughout the summer months. Repertoire includes Walton’s Belshazzar’s Feast, Chorus American National Conference Performance — works by Brahms, Messiaen, Bernstein, and Êriks Ešenvalds, A Broadway Tribute to Lerner and Lowe, Chorus in the Parks – Acapella Concert, Haydn’s Theresa Mass, and Orff’s Carmina Burana.

Supplemental Chorus Mezzo Sarah Ponder performed with cello legend Yo-Yo Ma in a Concert for Peace hosted by the Chicago Symphony Orchestra Association. The concert was part of St. Sabina’s Purpose Over Pain program which strives to promote healing for families who have been victims of violence.  For more info click here!

Regular Chorus Tenor Hoss Brock and Core Supplemental Bass Wilbur Pauley participated in the Chorus America National Conference in a concert presented by Cantate Chicago. The program consisted of Veljo Tormis Raua needmine (Curse Upon Iron), Vytautas Miškinis Dum medium silentium and Leonard Bernstein Missa Brevis.

Core Supplemental Tenor Jared Esquerra is performing the role of Fenton in Verdi’s Falstaff at Colorado’s Crested Butte Music Festival in July.

Stage Manager Sandra Lee Zamora Chavez is spending the summer with the Santa Fe Opera working on Madame Butterfly and The Italian Girl in Algiers.

Core Supplemental Soprano Kelsea Webb was heard in recital at Westminster Place retirement community in Evanston.

Core Supplemental Soprano Carla Janzen will be traveling to South Africa in July as a part of the Fourth Presbyterian Church choir tour. The group will be singing programs of American Folk Songs, African American Spirituals, and South African music throughout the region.

12 LOSA members performed with the Chicago Symphony Chorus in performances of Rossini’s Stabat Mater under the baton of Ricardo Muti. They will also be heard at the Ravinia Festival in July on a program of Bernstein’s Chichester Psalms and Beethoven’s Symphony No.9 conducted by Marin Alsop.
